From July 2025, electric vehicle owners in Ireland can opt for green plates under new registration rules. As a trusted broker for electric car insurance, we’re here to keep you up to speed on important updates like the new green number plate rollout in Ireland. We’ll explain what it means for EV drivers and how it could impact you.

What Are Green Flash Plates?

Green flash plates are a new style of car registration introduced in Ireland. They will help identify fully electric vehicles. Specifically, those that produce zero tailpipe CO₂ emissions. The plates look like standard Irish registration plates but include a vertical green stripe on the left-hand side.

You’ll start seeing more of these plates as new EVs are registered from July 2025 onward.

Who Needs Green Reg Plates in ireland?

The green number plate in Ireland is available for vehicles that produce zero emissions at the tailpipe. This includes fully battery electric vehicles and, in the future, hydrogen fuel cell vehicles. Whether it’s a car, van, motorbike, truck, or bus; if it emits no CO₂, it qualifies for the new green plate.

If you’re buying a new electric vehicle, your dealership will provide the green plate during registration. Existing EV owners aren’t left out. You can retrofit your current plates through approved registration plate suppliers.

For full details, visit the official Department of Transport announcement.

Why Have Green Plates?

There are several key reasons behind the rollout of these plates:

1. Easier EV Identification:

Other road users can recognise EVs, especially in areas with dedicated parking or charging.

2. Access to Benefits:

EVs with green plates may qualify for reduced tolls, low-emission zones, or parking incentives.

3. Environmental Awareness:

They serve as a visible reminder of the transition towards greener transport.

Common Questions About Green Reg Plates

What is the meaning of the green car no. plate?

The green no. plate means the car is fully electric – a quick identifier for both users and authorities.

Do I need a green number plate if I already own an EV?

Not necessarily. Green plates are standard for new EV registrations from July 2025, but existing EV owners can choose to retrofit their plates if they wish.

Are there government incentives for owning an EV in Ireland?

Yes. EV owners may benefit from several supports, including:

Purchase grants of up to €3,500 for new battery electric vehicles (BEVs)

Home charger grants of up to €300

VRT relief of up to €5,000

Benefit-in-Kind (BIK) tax relief for company EVs and chargers

Lower annual motor tax for electric vehicles

What You Need to Do

If you plan to register a new EV in Ireland, be ready to get green plates as per the new rules. Existing EV owners won’t need to change their plate unless they update their registration. Authorities and garages are already informed and ready to assist drivers.

Drivers can learn more about vehicle registration rules through the Citizens Information guide. It explains requirements for vehicle registration plates and details about EV rules like green plates.

The Bigger Picture

Green plates also link into broader EV infrastructure, both in Ireland and abroad. Platforms like Zevi are expanding charging access, making it easier to drive and maintain an EV.

Green plates are a visible marker of Ireland’s shift toward cleaner, compliant EV transport.

The introduction of green plates is a simple yet effective measure to support the growing EV community. From highlighting environmentally friendly driving to unlocking road advantages, it’s a win-win for drivers and the planet.

If you drive an electric car, or you’re thinking about making the switch, you’ve probably considered a few key things. Car insurance, running costs, and charging convenience are usually top of the list. The latest Regional and Local EV Charging Network Plan, announced in April, takes Ireland’s EV infrastructure to a new level. With thousands of public charge points planned in towns, villages and neighbourhoods, it’s easier than ever to choose EVs with confidence.

Filling Gaps in Rural and Urban Ireland

This plan builds on the earlier National Road EV Charging Network (rolled out in May 2024) to ensure there are no “white spots” left behind. Whether you’re in Dublin city centre or living in a commuter town or rural area, this strategy has you covered. The goal is to make EV chargers available near your home, workplace, or wherever your day takes you.

Useful Locations – Charging at Destinations

Local authorities plan to install a mix of slow, fast, and ultra-fast chargers across key locations. These destination sites include places like car parks, hotels, and shops, where people naturally spend time. So, you can top up while you run errands, spend time with family, or enjoy a night out. These aren’t just motorway amenities, but wherever daily life takes you.

Charging in Neighbourhoods – Without a Driveway

Many Irish households live on streets without off‑street parking. That’s why the plan includes neighbourhood AC charging points. These are typically slower chargers, ideal for overnight top-ups. They’re especially useful for apartment residents or those in terraced housing.

High-Power Charging for Journeys

The roll-out of 53 high-power EV hubs along national roads is already underway. These hubs will include 175 fast and ultra-fast charging points, covering over 1,200 km. The goal is to ensure that no two charging stations are more than around 60 km apart. That’s real reassurance for road trips from Cork to Donegal.

Funding, Targets, and Timelines

The programme is backed by nearly €8 million in government and EU funding, delivered through ZEVI and TII. It aims to deliver over 169 MW of charging capacity by 2025, with plans to scale up even further by 2030. It’s part of Ireland’s 2030 EV strategy and the EU’s AFIR mandates.

Why EV Drivers Benefit – Now and Later

Ease of access: Charge points everywhere you need them – work, shops, your neighbourhood.

Reliability on long trips: Fast chargers on main routes remove “range anxiety.”

Value added: Well-planned charging infrastructure contributes to used EV values.

What’s Next on the Grid

Local councils will now draw up delivery plans with measurable milestones, with phase-by-phase rollouts continuing through to 2030. Once the neighbourhood and destination network is live, further phases will tackle any “hard to serve” areas.

What This Means for You

Thinking of an EV? Planning your transition is easier with assurance of access to charging across the country.

Already EV‑powered? Watch for new charge points popping up near your home, village or local amenities.

Considering hybrid or electric car insurance? Your insurer may factor in local charging convenience. A strong EV infrastructure lowers risk and could even influence premiums or discounts.

Ireland’s new plan bridges the charging gap by putting fast, reliable EV infrastructure in all communities. This isn’t just about filling holes on the map. It’s about normalising electric driving for everyone, from families in housing estates to business owners in small towns.

Hybrid cars have become more popular as drivers seek cost-effective and sustainable alternatives to traditional fuel vehicles. But what is a hybrid car? It’s a vehicle that combines an internal combustion engine (usually petrol) with an electric motor. This combination of power sources helps hybrid cars improve fuel efficiency and lower emissions. In this guide, we’ll explain what a hybrid car is, the types available in Ireland, and the top models on the market. Plus, as your go-to provider of car insurance for electric vehicles, we can help you find the best coverage for your car.

Understanding Hybrid Cars in Ireland

So, what is a hybrid car in practical terms? Hybrid cars in Ireland use both a petrol engine and an electric motor to optimise fuel consumption. The electric motor typically assists during low-speed driving, while the petrol engine kicks in for higher speeds or when extra power is needed. This dynamic pairing allows hybrid cars to save on fuel and reduce CO2 emissions. In a world where sustainability is becoming more critical, these benefits make hybrid vehicles an excellent choice for eco-conscious drivers.

Types of Hybrid Vehicles

There are two main types of hybrid cars:

1. Full Hybrids (HEV)

These hybrids can run on just the electric motor, just the petrol engine, or a combination of both. The Toyota Prius and Toyota Corolla hybrid are prime examples of this type. In stop-and-go city traffic, the electric motor powers the vehicle, reducing fuel consumption. When driving at higher speeds, the petrol engine takes over. Full hybrids don’t require external charging; the battery charges itself while driving. This is done through using energy from the engine as well as regenerative braking.

2. Plug-In Hybrids (PHEV)

These vehicles have a larger battery and can be plugged into an external power source to charge. Plug-in hybrids like the Ford Kuga offer a longer electric-only range than full hybrids, which means you can drive shorter distances without using any petrol. However, once the electric range is depleted, the petrol engine kicks in. Check out this blog on our top 5 plug-in hybrid cars right now!

Popular Hybrid Cars in Ireland

A pioneer in the hybrid vehicle market, the Prius remains a popular choice worldwide. It’s especially popular among taxi drivers in Ireland. Check out this review on why it makes such a great choice for those in the driving profession.

What is it that makes Hybrid Cars a good choice?

1. Fuel Efficiency

One of the key advantages of hybrid cars is their ability to save on fuel costs. The electric motor assists the petrol engine, reducing fuel consumption during city driving and idling. This is especially noticeable in petrol hybrid cars that have been designed for maximum efficiency.

2. Lower Emissions

Hybrid vehicles produce fewer emissions than traditional petrol or diesel vehicles, making them a more environmentally friendly option. In urban areas, where air quality is a concern, choosing a hybrid vehicle can make a significant difference.

3. Tax Incentives

Hybrid cars in Ireland are more cost-effective over time. That is because if you’re driving a hybrid car, you’ll enjoy lower road tax compared to petrol or diesel-only cars.

4. Reduced Running Costs

Because hybrid cars rely on both petrol and electricity, the wear and tear on the engine is less compared to traditional fuel-run vehicles. This can lead to fewer maintenance costs in the long term.

How Hybrid Cars Work in Ireland’s Driving Conditions

Ireland’s driving conditions make hybrid vehicles a suitable choice for many drivers. In city traffic, where speeds are lower, a hybrid car often operates in electric mode, cutting down on fuel consumption. On the motorway, the petrol engine takes over. With the added benefit of support from the electric motor during acceleration, it improves efficiency.

Hybrid cars are especially useful given the growing focus on reducing emissions in urban areas. With hybrid cars becoming more accessible, many drivers are choosing them as a greener, more cost-efficient way to get around.

Are You Ready for a Hybrid Car?

These cars offer the best of both worlds: cleaner energy from the electric motor and the range reliability of a petrol engine. If you’re looking to reduce your carbon footprint without sacrificing the flexibility of petrol power, a hybrid car is a great option.

Understanding what a hybrid car is, and its benefits can help you make an informed decision. Whether you’re drawn to full hybrids or plug-in hybrids, the options available in Ireland offer flexibility, cost savings, and environmental benefits. With its dynamic driving experience and minimal environmental impact, the Ford Kuga is a smart choice for drivers seeking eco-friendly transportation.

Plug-in Hybrid Cars vs. Self-Charging Electric Vehicles

PHEV and self-charging hybrid cars in Ireland represent two distinct approaches to eco-friendly driving. Each one has its own set of advantages and considerations.

Plug-in hybrid Cars

These vehicles feature a larger battery that can be recharged by plugging into an external power source, such as a charging station or a standard electrical outlet. This allows plug-in hybrid cars to operate solely on electric power for a certain distance. This will reduce emissions and fuel consumption during city driving or short commutes in Ireland.

Self-Charging Hybrids

On the other hand, self-charging hybrids rely primarily on regenerative braking and the combustion engine to charge their smaller battery packs. While they cannot be plugged in to recharge, self-charging hybrids are still capable of running on electric power alone at low speeds or during light acceleration, contributing to fuel savings and reduced emissions in urban driving conditions.

When deciding between a plug-in hybrid car and a self-charging hybrid, consider your driving habits, commuting distance, and access to charging infrastructure. If you frequently travel short distances in Ireland and have access to charging stations, a plug-in hybrid car may offer greater fuel savings and environmental benefits. However, if you tend to drive longer distances or don’t have easy access to charging a self-charging hybrid might be a better option.

In a world where sustainability and performance go hand in hand, PHEV cars in Ireland offer a compelling choice for eco-conscious drivers. Whether you prioritise luxury, efficiency, or versatility, there’s a PHEV option to suit your needs.

If you’re on the hunt for a blend of convenience and eco-friendliness, small electric cars might just be your ideal pick. In this guide, we’re diving into the world of these compact electric wonders that are transforming the landscape of urban commuting and sustainability. If you’re in Ireland, you’re in luck – small electric cars are making waves on Irish roads, and as a leading provider of electric car insurance, we’re thrilled to introduce you to their benefits. So, buckle up and let’s explore the exciting realm of small electric cars!

Embracing Small Electric Cars in Ireland

As sustainability takes centre stage, small EVs are emerging as the perfect solution for eco-conscious drivers. Designed with compact dimensions, they’re tailor-made for city driving, fitting into tight spots, and gliding through traffic. This trend is especially prominent in Ireland, where city life demands nimble and environmentally friendly transportation options.

To learn more about why you should buy an electric car, read our blog!

The Advantages of Small Electric Cars

1. Emissions-Free Cruising

Electric cars run solely on electricity, emitting zero tailpipe pollutants. This means you can cruise around town without leaving a carbon footprint behind – a win for both you and the environment. Additionally, if you’re considering an EV as a company car, you’ll also benefit from lower Benefit-in-Kind (BIK) rates due to the reduced emissions associated with electric vehicles.

2. Effortless Manoeuvring

Navigating busy streets becomes a breeze with electric cars, especially if they’re small! Their compact size allows you to slip into tight spaces and parallel park like a pro.

3. Economical Performance

Electric cars typically have lower operational costs compared to traditional gasoline vehicles. Charging is often more affordable than refuelling with petrol or diesel, and maintenance requirements tend to be simpler due to fewer moving parts. Check out our guide on electric car charging costs.

1. The Benefits of Owning an Electric Vehicle

Before delving into the details of electric car charging costs, let’s briefly discuss the advantages of driving an EV. Not only do electric vehicles significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions, but they also contribute to cleaner air and a healthier environment. Moreover, EVs offer lower operating costs, reduced maintenance requirements, and potential incentives from the government, making them an appealing option for eco-conscious drivers. To read more about why you should buy an electric car, read our blog.

2. How Much Does Electric Car Charging Cost at Home?

One of the significant advantages of owning an electric vehicle is the convenience of charging it at home. To determine the cost, you need to consider two primary factors: your electricity rates and charging efficiency. In Ireland, residential electricity rates typically range from 20 to 25 cents per kilowatt-hour (kWh).

To calculate the cost of charging your electric car at home in Ireland, multiply the kWh consumption of your vehicle’s battery by the electricity rate. For instance, if your EV’s battery capacity is 50 kWh, and the electricity rate is 20 cents per kWh, the cost would be €10 for a full charge.

50 x €0.20 = €10.00

It’s also important to consider the range of your electric car. Discover the electric cars with the longest range on the market in Ireland.

3. The Cost of Installing an Electric Charger at Home

While discussing electric car charging costs, it’s essential to consider the expenses associated with installing a dedicated charger at home. Although it’s possible to charge your EV using a standard domestic socket, installing a dedicated home charging point offers several advantages, including faster charging times and increased safety.

The cost of installing an electric charger at home can vary depending on factors such as the charger type, installation requirements, and any necessary electrical upgrades. According to Money Guide Ireland, the average installation cost ranges from €1,299 – €2,000, including the charger unit, electrical work, and labour costs. However, it’s important to note that government grants, such as the SEAI Home Charger Grant of up to €600, can help offset these expenses.

4. Optimising Home Charging Efficiency

To reduce your electric car charging costs at home, consider implementing the following practices:

Time-of-Use Electricity Tariffs: Some electricity providers offer special tariffs that provide cheaper rates during off-peak hours. By charging your EV during these times, you can save on electricity costs.

Smart Charging Solutions: Utilising smart charging solutions enables you to take advantage of renewable energy generation or low-demand periods, further reducing your expenses.

Solar Panels: Installing solar panels on your property allows you to generate your electricity and potentially eliminate the cost of charging altogether. This option not only saves money but also promotes sustainable living. Doing this can also improve the BER rating of your home.

5. The Cost of Charging Your Electric Car in Public Places

While home charging is convenient, there are times when you’ll need to charge your EV in public places, such as shopping centres, workplaces, or when on long journeys. The cost of charging your electric car in these locations in Ireland varies, with factors like the charging network, location, and charging speed influencing the rates.

Public Charging Networks: Several public charging networks operate across Ireland, providing a range of charging options. These networks typically charge a fee per kWh consumed or an hourly rate. The average cost of public charging is approximately 56 cents per kWh.

Rapid Charging: Rapid charging stations allow you to charge your EV much faster than standard charging points. However, the cost per kWh is usually higher, at approximately 65 cents. Rapid charging is ideal for long trips or when you need to charge your car quickly.

6. Government Incentives and Grants

To encourage the adoption of electric vehicles, the Irish government offers various incentives and grants that can help offset electric car charging costs. These incentives include:

SEAI EV Grant: The Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland (SEAI) provides a grant of up to €5,000 for eligible EV buyers, making EV ownership more affordable.

SEAI Home Charger Grant: Irish homeowners can also avail of a grant of up to €600 for the installation of an EV charger at their residence.

Accelerated Capital Allowance (ACA): Businesses can benefit from the ACA scheme, which provides tax relief for the capital expenditure on electric vehicle charging infrastructure. This incentive encourages businesses, including those with commercial work vehicles to invest in charging stations, making EV charging more accessible and cost-effective. Read more about ACA.

Electric Vehicle Toll Incentive Scheme: Electric vehicle owners can avail of discounted toll rates or exemptions on certain toll roads in Ireland, contributing to overall cost savings.

It’s essential to stay updated on the latest government incentives and grants, as they may change over time. Check with local authorities and relevant government agencies for the most accurate and up-to-date information on available incentives.

We’ve rounded up the top six electric SUVs in Ireland right now so you can make an informed decision when it comes to choosing your new car.

If you’re on the lookout for an electric SUV in Ireland, you’ve got plenty of great options. Whether you’re looking for something affordable or something luxurious, there’s an electric SUV to suit your needs. We’ve rounded up the top six electric SUVs in Ireland right now so you can make an informed decision when it comes to choosing your new car.

Electric cars and SUVs have become more popular in Ireland over the years, and for good reason. These increasingly popular cars are more environmentally friendly, have lower fuel costs, and are incredibly reliable. Not to mention, electric car insurance can be much more cost-effective! In fact, according to the Central Statistics Office, the number of new electric cars licensed has increased by 81% between 2021 and 2022. To learn more about the benefits of electric cars, visit our website.

However, despite the recent trend, electric vehicles still have their drawbacks. Let’s look at some of the pros and cons of going electric to help you make an informed decision.

The Pros of Going Electric

Lowering your carbon footprint. Electric vehicles are much more environmentally friendly than their petrol or diesel counterparts. They use no petrol or diesel, and the electricity used to power them is often produced from renewable sources. This means you can minimize your environmental impact with an electric car.

More cost-effective. The cost of an electric car is lower than a petrol or diesel car. They don’t require expensive fuel, the electricity is cheaper than petrol or diesel, and they require no oil changes. Additionally, most electric cars come with tax credits.

Reliability. Electric vehicles are incredibly reliable. They rarely require maintenance, and they don’t need to be serviced as often as petrol or diesel cars.

The Cons to Be Considered

Limited Range. Electric cars have limited ranges and it can at times, be difficult to find charging stations. This means electric 4x4s may not be suitable for long-distance travel in Ireland and you’d need to consider appropriate stop-offs to recharge throughout your journey.

Price. Electric cars can be costly to purchase new. However, there are electric vehicle grants available from the Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland (SEAI) to help you make the switch to zero emissions.

Availability. Electric cars aren’t always widely available. Moreover, in certain rural areas, you may find it more difficult to locate charging points.

Overall, electric SUVs have a variety of pros and cons in Ireland. They are more environmentally friendly and cheaper to operate, but have a limited range and can be more expensive to buy outright. It is important to consider all these factors before deciding to go electric.

Our Top Picks for an Electric SUV in Ireland

Electric cars are growing in popularity every year in Ireland, people usually buy one as a second car. Electromobility is being promoted by the Irish government, car companies and many media outlets.

Therefore, it is not surprising that more and more people are thinking about buying an electric car. According to CSO, there are now thought to be over 45,000 electric cars in Ireland and 2021 saw 8,646 new electric cars registered – more than twice the number added in 2020.

What is an electric car and how does it work?

An electric car is essentially a car powered by electricity. In many ways it differs from a gasoline car. Electric cars have many different types. An electric car works by using a battery to store energy. When the battery is charged, it can power the car’s engine. The engine can then start the vehicle. In reality, electric cars come in a wide variety of different models and types, which include,

Electric vehicle (EV)

Battery electric vehicle (BEV)

Plug-in hybrid (PHEV)

Hybrid (HEV)

Mild electric vehicle (MHEV)

Range-extended electric vehicle (RE-EV)

Hydrogen vehicle (FCEV)

Why an electric car?

Electric cars have many advantages over traditional gasoline cars. One of the key ones is that they are environmentally friendly and generate no emissions while driving. The more electric cars on the road, the better the air quality will be, especially in large cities. Of course, it is important to power the cars with green energy.

They are also much cheaper cars to operate than other vehicles – even when you factor in the higher initial cost of an electric car. These cars are structurally simpler than combustion cars – they have fewer moving parts and are easier to service. As a result, we can count on high reliability and reduced maintenance required for trouble-free miles. Maintenance is also cheaper, and in EVs we can also enjoy slower wear and tear of brake components. With fuel prices constantly rising, the electric car becomes even more attractive. The cost of charging the car is significantly lower than what drivers pay at gas stations. And this is despite also rising electricity prices.

Electric cars are in rapid development today, and current proposals on the market are often the first generation of electrified models. In electric cars, maximum torque is always available. A car powered by blue energy guarantees excellent acceleration. There are many cars on the market that are able to put to shame the performance of many super sport cars like Ferrari or Lamborghini. For example, the Audi RS e-tron GT accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 3.3 seconds. The Porsche Taycan Turbo S takes just 2.8 seconds to reach that speed. The Tesla Model S Plaid accelerates to its first 100 km/h from a standing start in a cosmic 2.1 seconds. More and more electric cars can cover 300, more than 500 kilometres or even 700 kilometres on a charge.

Electric motors are almost silent compared to internal combustion engines. This translates directly into improved driving comfort. Thanks to the fact that modern electric cars are built on platforms developed specifically for this type of car, the use of space is optimised. In an electric car, the wheels are usually positioned closer to the edge of the body, and this means a great deal of legroom compared to combustion cars, as well as a much roomier trunk.

Toyota bZ4X

A real revolution is coming to Toyota’s line-up this year. Joining the brand’s model range is the bZ4X midsize SUV – Toyota’s first global battery-electric model, designed on the all-new eTNGA platform. Available in several equipment versions and in two powertrains, Toyota’s electric model is the fruit of this manufacturer’s 25 years of experience in developing electrified powertrains. Front-wheel drive or 4-wheel drive, excellent standard equipment and state-of-the-art features are the electrifying combination that makes the Toyota bZ4X likely to win the hearts of customers. Low energy consumption is made possible by streamlined shapes, economical electric motors and a heat pump that is part of the car’s standard equipment. It is responsible for efficient heating of the interior with minimal consumption of electricity. The interior of the bZ4X is spacious and comfortable thanks to its long wheelbase. The Toyota bZ4X also remains true to Toyota’s typical qualities. Full of cutting-edge technology and reliable, the electric car is meant to last for many years, which is why Toyota ensures that after 10 years of use (or 240,000 kilometres) the battery will maintain a minimum of 90% of its initial efficiency.

Hyundai Ioniq 5

The Hyundai Ioniq 5 is arguably the best family-sized electric car for sale right now. Don’t be confused by pictures, because while the Ioniq 5 looks like a fairly conventional hatchback, in the metal it’s closer in size to a compact SUV, and its dedicated EV platform creates lots of space for the modern interior. Hyundai offers two battery sizes and either rear- or four-wheel drive for the Ioniq 5, although as with many of its rivals, if you want the longest range, you need to avoid the top-spec models, which will save you cash in the process. A two-wheel-drive model with the larger 77kWh battery offers the best range of 507km, but since the Ioniq 5 has been designed as an EV from the ground up – rather than being adapted from a petrol model – all versions deliver great efficiency. We also think its retro styling looks great.

Volkswagen ID.5

It’s a compact SUV coupe with electric drive. Granted, it’s a bit squat, but the ID.5 turns that into an asset. Looking at the car from the side, it’s not only the roofline and the neatly integrated rear spoiler that impress, but especially the front of the car, which looks a bit like a bull looking overhead. We also like the way the headlights transition into the horizontal grill strip. For an SUV, and in general for a compact car with a height of 161 cm, the Volkswagen ID.5 is very aerodynamic. Its drag coefficient is only 0.26.

As you can see, electric cars have a lot of advantages. They improve driving comfort and do not pollute the environment. There is a large selection of them in different price ranges. You may be surprised to learn that one of the benefits of buying an electric vehicle is that you can now avail of a reduced car insurance premium. Plus if you are purchasing it as a business vehicle, there could be even more savings to be made.

Massive Increase in the Number of Electric Car Registrations

Over the last two years, there has been an undeniable upward trend in the purchase of electric vehicles. Figures from the Irish Motor Industry (SIMI) show a 542% increase in the number of electric car registrations in Ireland in the first two months of 2019. Up to the end of February 2019, 1,129 electric cars were registered; that’s nearly as many as the total number of registrations in 2018 (1,233 registrations). The shift toward electric cars is happening!

Benefits of Electric Cars

Not only can driving an electric vehicle lower your insurance premium, it also carries a very wide range of monetary benefits including:

Reduced running costs

€120 motor tax band for electric vehicles

Reduced fuel costs

Positive environmental benefits

A government grant of up to €7000 for the purchase of the vehicle

Reduced toll charges on the M50 Motorway under the Electric Vehicle Toll Incentive scheme (EVTI)

A common anxiety associated with driving electric is that it will run out of power in an area which is not near any charging points. But the Government is continuing to increase the availability of fast charging points across Ireland as well as a grant of up to €600 towards a home charging point. With the range of a new electric vehicle (for example a Nissan Leaf) being up to 270km, the network of electric charging points across the county and Ireland being a small island, you are unlikely to be stuck without power.

Personal Electric Car Insurance

At Insuremycars.ie, we have seen a huge increase in demand for car insurance quotes for EV and have responded by negotiating a special discount with insurers for EV drivers. This can make electric car premiums up to 10% cheaper than petrol or diesel car ones.

So, as well as the benefits of cheaper running and fuel costs, you can now save on your insurance premium. Although the initial purchase expense can be more than initially expected, you will save money in the long term by going green.

Available Electric Vehicle Insurance Policy Benefits:

Breakdown Assistance including out of charge cover

Windscreen Cover

Driving of other cars

Car replacement in the event of accident

Step back bonus protection

Full bonus protection

Business Owner & Company Car Insurance for EV

The purchase of an electric car for your business could mean great savings. A new initiative introduced by the Department of Finance means that an electric vehicle up to the value of €50,000 can be purchased as a 0% Benefit In Kind. As of 1 January 2018, no taxable benefit will arise for an employee or a director, where an employer provides an employee or director with an electric car or van.

But while this is a great initiative, we found that business owners were running into a costly obstacle when insuring the vehicle. Business owners who opted to switch to a company electric vehicle had to take out a brand new insurance policy through the company – with zero no claims bonus.

Insuremycars.ie have responded to this issue by negotiating with insurers to allow the existing private car policy of a business-owner to be used for their new company electric car. So, if the vehicle is still used privately, you cant transfer your bonus into your business name and save on your premium.

There are so many advantages to the purchase of an Electric Car in 2019, both financial and environmental. While the purchase cost may seem substantial, it is an investment worth making. You are guaranteed to save money in the long run. Not to mention, you’re playing your part in preserving the environment.
